The stories people tell have a way of taking care of them. If stories come to you, care for them. And learn to give them away where they are needed. Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive.”

Crow and Weasel, Barry Lopez, 1990

Family Stories

Family stories, handed down. Oral history, brought alive through the telling of these stories. If you have ever wished you had some of these stories recorded, the voices of loved ones  preserved, the library may be able to help, through both people and resources. Thanks to a grant from the Noble Foundation, the library now has equipment for videotaping conversations centered around local history and family stories. We call it the Fredericksburg Oral History Project. Volunteers have compiled a questionnaire to help guide the conversation, and are also ready to help with running the camera and the interview itself. If you would like to preserve your family stories, or local history, please contact the library!

Thank you, Volunteers!

The 17th Annual VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DINNER will be held November 10 at the MCA Church in Fredericksburg. We celebrate our dedicated volunteers, recognizing the fact that we couldn’t  have the library without them! Our guest speaker will be John Lorson, local writer, cyclist, and photographer, who will share stories and photos of his travels in the slow lane, in his presentation titled “Shots Along The Way.” Many know John through his weekly humor column “Send Help,” which has run in local newspapers for more than 18 years and is accompanied by the comic illustrations of his wife, Kristin Lorson.  We look forward to a very fun evening! THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS- you’re the best!!

Telling Our Stories

One of the wonderful things about the library is that it is a place for people to come in; from the cold of winter, or the heat of summer; to sit awhile, find a good book, catch up on emails, or browse through the collection of items regarding the history of Fredericksburg. It is always amazing where people come from! Last summer there was a group traveling across the U.S. from France, and just happened to stop in at the Fredericksburg Community Library! The language barrier didn’t keep us from communicating our love for libraries and books!
We each have a story to tell. Those who have grown up in Fredericksburg; have lived here all their lives; or have lived here for a time, have memories of that time. This year the library board would like to make an effort to bring people together and tell their stories! You will be hearing more about this throughout the year. For now, you are invited to come to the library on Tuesday, March 31. We’ll be sharing ideas of how to preserve these stories. If you have ever thought “It sure would be great to get some of Mom & Dad’s, or Grandma & Grandpa’s stories down”, please join us on March 31, 6 p.m.!
